BIS certification for LED lights: IS 10322, the CRS R-number and how to verify it
Almost every LED lighting tender in India asks for BIS compliance, and almost every supplier claims it. The claim is easy to check, but few buyers do. This guide explains how BIS registration works for LED products, which standards apply to which product, and how to verify a supplier's registration before you award an order.
LED products fall under the Compulsory Registration Scheme
LED lighting products in India are covered by the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS), notified under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order. Products on the list cannot legally be sold in India unless the manufacturer has registered them with BIS, after testing at a BIS recognised laboratory.
This is different from the familiar ISI mark, which belongs to the older product certification scheme. LED products under CRS carry the BIS Standard Mark with a registration number instead. A fitting that shows an ISI mark but no R-number is worth a second look.

These are safety standards. Performance, meaning lumen output, efficacy, colour and lumen maintenance, is covered by a separate family of standards and is usually written into the tender specification itself. A complete bid therefore carries both the CRS registration and a performance test report.
What the R-number tells you
Each registration has a number made of R- followed by eight digits. It is issued to a specific manufacturer, for a specific brand, against a specific standard, and it lists the models covered. The number must be printed on the product or its label along with the IS number.
How to verify a supplier in five minutes
- Ask the supplier for the registration number and the certificate for the exact product family you are buying.
- Search the number on the BIS CRS portal. Check that the status is valid, not expired or cancelled.
- Check that the brand name on the registration matches the brand printed on the fitting you are being offered.
- Check that the model you are buying is in the list of models covered, and that the wattage falls within the registered range.
- Check that the standard is right for the product. A street light registered only as a general purpose luminaire is not registered as a street light.
The most common problem is not forgery. It is a trader supplying a fitting under one brand while quoting a registration held by a different manufacturer. The portal check catches that immediately.
Registration has to be renewed
CRS registrations are granted for a fixed period and must be renewed. For long running rate contracts, ask for the expiry date and put the obligation to maintain a valid registration into the contract.
